About the Media Council of Uganda
Our Mission
The Media Council of Uganda is a self-regulatory body established to promote and ensure ethical journalism practices across Uganda. We work to uphold the highest standards of media professionalism while protecting press freedom and the rights of journalists.
What We Do
The Council serves as the primary regulatory authority for print and online media in Uganda. Our key functions include:
- Accrediting journalists and media practitioners
- Enforcing the Code of Ethics for journalists
- Handling complaints against media houses and journalists
- Promoting media literacy and professional development
- Protecting press freedom and journalists' rights
- Facilitating dialogue between media and the public
Our History
Established under the Press and Journalist Act, the Media Council of Uganda has been at the forefront of promoting responsible journalism and protecting media freedom in the country. We work closely with government institutions, civil society, and international media organizations to create an enabling environment for quality journalism.
Digital Credential System
As part of our commitment to modernizing journalist accreditation, we have launched a digital credential verification system. This QR-based system allows instant verification of journalist credentials, helping to combat media fraud and enhance public trust in accredited journalists.
